Who is he, by the way?

My first story as a reporter was a radio documentary for the community radio in Aarhus. It was about the Israeli suppression of the Palestinians. It was in 1984, and I had just returned from a back-packer trip to the Middle East and Asia during which I met with the Israeli peace movement,  visited refugee camps in Gaza and Damascus, and stayed for weeks with Palestinian students at Bir Zeit University on the West Bank.

While I was there a few fundamentalist Jewish settlers  massacred students at Hebron University. Suddenly I found myself in a demonstration with a sign: ”We’re gonna tell it at home”. The pictures went worldwide, and I had made a promise. After this first radio documentary I signed up for journalism studies – and here we are.

Before my backpacker travels I worked as an unskilled labourer and builder, I built scenes  at a theatre and worked at Aarhus Lumberyard where I was elected as a union representative for the lumberjacks and truck drivers. That was in the 1970s and we went on strike and that was good, because I was a Maoist on the left wing.

My Berlin Wall – or rather Chinese Wall – fell in 1980, when I realized that the Chinese Cultural Revolution was a hoax, and that the Peoples Republic suppressed the very same people. I resigned from the small Danish Maoist party. Later I have been in both Cambodia and Albania as a media trainer and I apologized for my misconceptions. I have not been a member of any party since.

Fortunately, I found my platform as a  publicist and via a critical agenda-setting approach to journalism that was first formulated by Joseph Pulitzer as the editorial policy of The New York World in late 1800, and which the Pulitzer Prize still reminds us about.

Although I never won any Pulitzer Prize, I did receive a very honourable prize in 2010, named after a Danish veteran in Journalism, Carsten Nielsen, from Danish Union of Journalists. The prize was given for the volunteer efforts when founding IMS and Games.

Traditionally, it  is now the  time and place to thank my parents; my mother Anette Møller, a nurse’s aide, and my father Erling Møller, a school teacher, for my birth in August 1957. And my son Lynge 🙂

I graduated from the Danish School of Journalism in 1989 after four years of study, including 1½ years at the local newspaper Lemvig Folkeblad.

Since then, I have worked as a freelance journalist at a press bureau, with my own company Tekst&Vision Ltd. and now for some years in Filmbyen, Aarhus.

…and right now, while writing these lines (back in 2008), I am sitting with my legs on the table, the computer in my lap, listening to Aimee Mann in the living room in an apartment in Graven 8, formerly a hippie community, now with valuable equities, while I wait for my 17-year-old son to come back from the movies.

Anyway, I once heard an old saying in a Kung-Fu movie: “The bullcart is slow, but the earth has great patience”.  I hope you also have … 🙂

PR and Communication

For a good journalist professional communication is a matter of finding the right angle. An angle is a claim that the receiver demands justification for! Bingo.

Basically, PR and communication is an interesting interaction between a sender, a subject matter and a receiver.

It begins with the preparations: What do you want to achieve? Get to the point! And who do you want to reach? Define the objective and the target group.

The next step is the challenge of finding the exact claims on the matter which can catch the interest of the receivers to the extent that they demand more information on your website. This is what finding an angle is all about:  creating interaction in a one-way communication.

I am the King of Angling, and I am wild about development. Therefore I can without bragging say: My press releases are used as articles in  newspapers and for TV and radio reports.

I have done PR and Communication for DanChurch Aid, ActionAid Denmark, World Bank, Scandinavian Medical Society of Paraplegia, Aarhus Business School, VIA University College Horsens and many, many more.

Ads and commercials I don’t know much about. And I am not a big believer in them, either. My advice will often be: Save the money, also those to the advertisement companies.

Please note, that I don’t do PR for anyone or anything. It has to make some sense for me, and even more important, it must not do any harm.

It is better to be pro-active end reactionary. When communication consultants offer damage control, it is because the change is occurring too late. I don’t mind damage control, but for me the aim is not to cover up but rather to correct an error and gain time for changes. Better late than never! And I will never say never again.

Disclaimer: There are limits for what I want to be part of. If a client has something to hide, it is better to find another consultant, or even better a lawyer. I don’t want to sound sanctimonious, but if the consideration to the public’s ”right to know” has more weight that the consideration to the client, then I go with the public.

Activist and Change Maker

I am a change maker. I can’t help starting new things.

Entrepreneurship is fun and creative. I often  tell myself that what I do  is important. Professionally I arrange conferences, networking, study tours and even events – making real events for the sake of an idea, not media stunts.

Activist. When the projects get too big to handle for a single man and his friends, I form an organization,  for example:

International Media Support. By far the greatest project I have run up is the media organisation IMS. It all began with a reporting assignment to war-torn ex-Yugoslavia during the wars in the 1990s. Persecuted colleagues asked for help, while other colleagues actively forged the conflict with nationalistic propaganda. The international society helplessly watched it happen. We had to do something! The world needed an international aid organisation that could support such media in conflict. Back home I started advocating for the organization and after some years it was a reality. Today IMS is one of the biggest players in the world of international media organisations – and I am still on the board. See more at www.mediasupport.org.

Games (Gambia Media Support). Some years later I started Games, a small but very active NGO of volunteer media practitioners supporting colleagues in The Gambia. The idea was conceived during one of many professional travels to the tiny West African country. Every year I came, a new president of Gambia Press Union asked if I could do something to assist them. And when Deyda Hydara was shot, I had to do something. The country is not only the smallest in Africa; it is also one of  the poorest and is left behind by most development organizations. Here it was actually possible to make a difference, even for a small colleague2colleague organization. See more at www.GambiaMediaSupport.org. Watch the film “The Gambian Danish Connection” here:

John Cleese Society of Aarhus & Omegn. This is the funniest. It is a totally meaningless organization, which never the less organized two gigantic John Cleese Festivals in Aarhus – with participation from the man himself. Otherwise the society is notorious for not conducting any meetings whatsoever.

Our mission is to send up a hot air balloon portraying the head of John Cleese; it will glide over the cities and the lands, leaving all looking up with a smile on their faces. So there’s the meaning: a good deed and a smile. Mind you, most smiles start with a smile. So far we have collected more than 10.000 Euro for the purpose, so we are on the way, but please help us, we need  100.000 more. I am the general inspector of the society and the fundraising Head of Office for Other People’s Money.  See more at www.Cleese.dk.

Trainer and Consultant

I like to train. It is usually fun. I also like to develop curricula and design training courses. I am  actually somewhat of a  course “smith” in journalism, communication and pedagogy, in Denmark and abroad.

Training menu. As a trainer I offer training of trainers, pedagogical supervision, curriculum development, course planning, open education and distance learning, communication courses and journalism training  in everything from investigative reporting to feature writing to editorial writing.  **) Please find a menu of possible courses below.

Catalyst. I enjoy training and coaching because of the close contact with those who learn. I can sense if I make a difference. Sometimes I can even see when a Eureka  moment transforms a student or participant. It is as if the student has found the missing piece of the jigsaw puzzle. However, the real changes appear only after a period of time. It is a privilege to be the catalyst for such changes.

Change. If training doesn’t lead to the desired change, it doesn’t matter. Indifferent training and teaching may at best be entertaining. At worst  it leaves the participants disappointed and disillusioned. The same goes for coaching, I suppose.

Objectives.  There is no such thing as a free ride. We agree to identify the objectives from the very beginning, whether they concenr knowledge, skills or awareness. With clear objectives we can easily evaluate if we reach them. If not, you get a refund!*)

*)and here is the note on course contract and responsibility for own learning.

Methods. There is no shortage of buzzwords: Learning styles, participatory training, hands-on approach, cooperative learning, action-reflection-learning – all this is just me! My philosophical and practical point of departure is David Kolb’s Learning Cycle and the theory of the four coherent learning styles: The Activist, The Reflector, The Theorist and The Pragmatist.

Continuous learning. We know how it is: You participate in a course, learn a lot, and get back to the office only to realize that you are not implementing the newly learned material in your work. Either because the routines do not allow it, or it is hard to implement the new ways. To me, the follow-up is just as important as the course itself. Reflections and personal plans are an integrated part of any of my training courses.

As a journalism trainer, I teach at media houses and universities all over the world, in particular I am external lecturer and curriculum developer at the Danish School of Media and Journalism.

As a communication trainer, I teach staff in public offices, private companies and NGOs. I conduct courses in specielized communication for special clients  such as hospitals, ministries and banks.

Consultant

In-house training is naturally combined with management consultancy. I see the course as just one step in the course of the development that the media house wants to achieve. The steps before and after are usually more important.

However, I have often seen media managers who tend to forget their responsibility as carriers of this development. It is rarely enough to give the staff a course; the office structures and work routines must be reformed coherently. In addition, the managers must nurse their employees’ continuous learning and development after the training  with praise, challenges and sanctions.

I prefer to work on two levels as a trainer and coach for the staff and a consultant for the management,– with courses and coaching tailored to structural development.

As a member of the Peace and Stabilisation Response (FSB), I have undertaken relevant training courses e.g. Security in the Field and Conflict management as well as  Logical Framework Approach. On behalf of the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs FSB  contributes to peace and stability in hotspots and fragile states.

My key qualifications include:  Project development and management; fact finding – description and analysis; organisation – initiation and development; coaching and editorial consulting; communication – PR, information and campaigns; cross cultural cooperation and communication; operating in conflict zones and fragile entities.

Internationally, I have worked as a consultant and trainer for a great number of development organisations, media institutes and universities such as:

  • The Economic Development Institute, World Bank
  • The EU-India Economic Cross Cultural Programme
  • FOJO in Sweden
  • European Journalism Centre in Maastricht, Holland
  • DanChurchAid
  • International Media Support
  • Nepal Press Institute
  • Press Institute of Mongolia
  • Uganda School of Media and Journalism

Looking for change…?

If you are looking for change, creativity and a bit of fun – preferably all in one – then I bid you welcome to my page.

Change has been the underlying theme throughout my career. Change at home and change abroad. As ridiculous as it may sound, I try to change the world for the better. On my own scale.

Basically I am a reporter. A classic reporter, not a reporter “light”.

For quite some years, however, development, training, and communication have become my main fields of action.

There is always an objective for my activities. To me, the most creative part of a process is to find out where we are heading – and how to get there. The rest is work; not boring work, but implementation.

The challenge is to aim for the best possible solution under the given circumstances. Clear objectives and structures pave the way for creative, sensitive, and humorous processes – whether it is teaching, communication, development or, for that matter, producing results.

At other times the process itself becomes the objective, when experimenting is more interesting than the results, or when questioning has more value than the answers.

So please, feel free to ask any questions… 🙂
